Vivlos (or better known as Tripodes) is one of the most picturesque and largest villages of southwestern Naxos. It is about 7 km from Chora and a short distance from the famous beach of Plaka.
Tripodes, with its whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, and picturesque windmills, has a genuine Cycladic atmosphere and is one of the liveliest villages of Naxos, with a population of over 800 permanent residents.
A source of wealth for the village is the plain of Plaka, where, apart from the famous naxian potatoes, fruit and vegetable crops, barley and vines that produce famous wine are cultivated.
Its attractions include the imposing church of Panagia Tripodiotissa, patroness of the village, the picturesque windmills on the hill at the entrance of the village, the ruins of the tower of Plaka, also known as Palaiopyrgos or Ariadne’s tower, as well as the Folklore Museum that houses in the renovated olive mill of the village.
Around the large square with the eucalyptus trees, several traditional cafes operate, while the village’s taverns are famous for their mezes and wine. There is also a large super market, a pharmacy and a butcher shop. The “Assumption of Virgin Mary”, on August 23, is celebrated with a big festival, where people gather from all over the island.
